Memory #1: One of Akin's kidnappers dies of stomach ulcers
Summary
Akin was seventeen months old, precocious enough to speak like a grade-schooler, but about at that stage of physical development. He was with a bunch of strange men around a campfire eating a (poor) breakfast. One of the men started throwing up blood and collapsed. This scared the shit out of Akin, since no one could do anything about it besides comfort the guy. Form their conversation, he learns that this is not a new problem, though it's getting worse.
Akin remembered that in his village, one would just need to go find one of the ooloi (Oankali third sex) if one was hurt at all. He also remembers that he can stop his own bleeding but doesn't know how to teach anyone that skill. But he's struck by the utter wrongness of letting someone suffer like this when there's a way to heal them.
One of the men picks up on his distress and wonders if he's getting sick, and Akin answers out of reflex. He also tries to make his point that they should turn around and get help for the sick man. The man freaks out at a toddler using full sentences and asks what the hell is he. The man seems to have accepted his friend is sick and dying, and says that both he and the sick man would rather commit suicide than let an ooloi touch them.
The man wonders what Akin is, and Akin tells him his mother was human. He also gets upset when the man brings up someone ('that Phoenix') who had been killed protecting Akin by these men because Akin might be valuable. Akin promises to be valuable to these men, so they'll get rid of him.

-- Man, what a scary memory. Though it scares him more that between Ari's memories and what Jace has told him of Sabra, Curls himself can't rely on having an ooloi to patch him up.
-- He's also more consciously aware of the difference between Oankali and humans regarding gender. He remembers he has five parents, and he was born to a human but isn't fully human himself.
-- Sensory issues. Akin as a kid was almost completely human looking -- his senses were a bit muted and he'd be more aware of having a nose and not breathing out of a hole in his throat. And, you know, the lack of tentacles.
-- Having more control over his fast healing is nice. And, you know, knowing about it. He has enough knowledge from Ari to know that most humans can't control their bodies in this way and heal slower.
-- +10 self-sacrifice, or at least willingness to push the system. Granted, Curls also has the empathy enough to realize if he's punished for this, it will hurt Canis. And he remembers losing someone, and he doesn't want anyone to feel this.
-- He was being taken away from his home against his will in this memory, and he just wants to get away from these scary people who killed someone to catch him and were willing to let their own friends die.
Also, as a note, Curls will be easing off the meat he eats, but not enough to starve. Probably a lot of trying things growing in the higher places (he's avoiding the water on Jace's word) and seeing what's edible.
